The island of Ciovo is a popular holiday destination, located very close to the mainland and Split Airport (and of course, Split itself). Although it’s an island, Ciovo is in fact connected to the mainland by a modern bridge (opened in 2018).

Čiovo is a small island located off the Adriatic coast in Croatia with an area of 28.8 square kilometers (11.1 sq mi) (length 15.3 km (9.5 mi), width up to 3.5 km (2.2 mi)). In the Middle Ages, Čiovo had many villages and it was a place for lepers. Remains of the pre-Romanesque church of St. Peter have been found near Slatine, in the Supetar cove. The medieval church of St. Maurice (Sv. Mavro) has been preserved in Žedno and the pre-Romanesque church of Our Lady near the Sea (Gospa pokraj mora). The population of Čiovo increased in the 15th century through the settlement of refugees who fled from the Turks. Simultaneously, the suburban areas of Trogir also extended to Čiovo.

Nowadays it consists of many villages. On the east side, from Trogir crossing the bridge and then left, there is the village Mastrinka, then Arbanija and Slatine at the end. Over the hill there is the small settlement of Žedno. Again from Trogir crossing the bridge and then right, there is Okrug Gornji and the Okrug Donji, at the very end of the island. On the southern side of the island then there are Mavarstica (south-east), Businci and Rastici (south-west). All this villages are full of apartments and villas, making of the island of Ciovo a big holiday resort which attracts many tourists all over the world.

Cultural heritage

Many are the churches which can be seen on the island of Ciovo.

Close to Trogir on the small hill Bilin Dolac, it is settled the Franciscan monastery of St. Anthony and the Church of St. Jerome which has preserved its appearance from the XVII. century. The convent guards the crown made of silver with jewels from XIV. century. The monastery keeps a painting by Palma the Younger and a sculpture of St. Magdalene by Ivan Duknovic.

Continuing on the west side of the island in the small village Arbanija at only 5 kilometres (3 miles) from Trogir you will find the church and the Dominican monastery of the Holy Cross (Sv. Križ), built in the 15th century by the masters Ivan Drakanović and Nikola Mladinov. The monastery features a nice cloister; the polychrome vault of the dining room has been preserved, as well as the paintings by Matija Poncun and other.

Along the cost, in the centre of Slatine it stands the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the XVII century. Following the eastern coast, up the cliff is the nicely located hermitage church of Our Lady of Prizidnica. The church in Prizidnice was built in 1546 by priest J. Strojdražić, the hermit of Prizidnice who had settled there years before. It is 460 years old and many stories and legends are connected with the place itself, which elder people from Slatine will gladly share when you visit it.

Going back and over the hill which starts at the church of the Holy Cross (Sv. Križ), in the small village Žedno, two other small churches will be found. The first one is in the centre of the village, the Church of the Blessed John from Trogir and the church of St. Mauro from the 4th century. The church gives its name to the small settlement “Movarčica”, the today Mavarštica.

Following the route to Okrug Gornji, passing through a narrow passage, on your left side it stands the Parish Church of St. Charles Borromeo, built in its present form in 1735. Previously, in its place there was a chapel dedicated to the same saint. Today the church is a simple rectangular building with an apse and distaff with two bells on the front side.

Along the south-western side of Čiovo, vis-a-vis the beach, is a small island called Fumija, with the remains of the late antique or early mediaeval church of St. Fumija and farm buildings of the Benedictine monks from Trogir. Following the road in direction of Okrug Donji, it is erected the Chapel of St. John the Baptist. Unknown is the year of construction. The poet Andreis mentions it in the 17th century saying it was built by villagers.

On the other side, two bays, today very visited by the sailors, the Kancelirovac bay on the northwest coast of the island of Ciovo with remains of Citadel of Saint John, raised like a fortress on the rock cliffs and the bay of Racetinovac, with the rest of mansion of the family Racettin. This pious family builds the mansion and a church dedicated to St. Anthony in the year 1630.

Coming back to Trogir, long the sea side, not so far from Trogir and it the middle of the so called Copacabana beach, it stands the small Church of St. Theodore, located near the sea. The year of construction of the church is not known, but it is referred to 1439. The present church was built on the site of the demolished old Croatian church. The church was declared a cultural monument in 1963. The local cemetery is just next to the church.

Food scene in Trogir is dedicated to providing the best quality for the locals and our guests. Being on the coast, naturally, most traditional meals are revolving around fresh sea food, vegetables, herbs (spices) and of course, magnificent olive oil. In the right hands, food becomes art.

Written by: Ksenija Ninić
Source: trogirbyhearth.com

As we said so many times before, Dalmatia is to be enjoyed with all the senses, especially taste and smell. The culinary scene here gives you the opportunity to enjoy traditional but also modern cuisine, with freshness as a main note.

When thinking about a family or friends gathering, for celebrations, mourning or just a cold winter night, there is no escape from food being served. “Just a little bit, something for nibbling”, and then it begins; few platters of cheeses and prosciutto, grill is being fired for meat and vegetables which are then smothered in homemade olive oil and seasoned with just a pinch or two of sea salt. So never believe if you are ever invited for a gathering that it is going to be “just a little bit”.

Family table is a big deal, and in the past, lunch or dinner time with the whole family meant for some the only time a family had together in the day. A great importance is given to meals. What used to be poor people’s food is not considered that anymore because there is abundance of it is eaten daily in the households of this area. Fish soup, sardines with Swiss chard and potatoes with potent garlic from the fields of Ljubitovica (which is considered one of the best garlic sorts in the world), tripe stew, swiss chard and broad beans from the garden, cuttlefish and broad beans, “brudet”, “fritule” (fried dough balls sprinkled with icing sugar) or “paradižot” (a dish that is made in few other places in Europe, but ours is the best one, of course) for desert, are just some of the dishes traditionally eaten in most Dalmatian households here. Sundays and special occasions are reserved for “pašticada” (we could go on and on about this hearty dish, and therefore we give you one of the recipes on the next page), “peka” made of meat or octopus, codfish stew, “brudet” made from the best quality white fish, grilled white fish with a mixed vegetables salad. There is a saying here that fish needs to swim three times, once in the sea, once in the oil and lastly in wine. So good Dalmatian wine is a must. And as a crown for the feast comes the dessert, “rafioli” (ingredients on the next page) or “rožata”. Oh my, my, pure art!

Form of art

This love and knowledge of good food is also intertwined in to the local restaurants’ offer, where the story of local and fresh ingredients continues. All the dishes will compliment your senses. Taste of fresh rosemary, basil, parsley, sage, garlic, olive oil and amazing sea salt that our clean sea provides for us, as well as salted or pickled capers, caperberries, sea fennel, are more than enough to show you a whole palette of flavours that we grew up with and live with every day. There is no need to complicate, simplicity of ingredients is sometimes all that we need. The way one puts them together is a form of art though. From authentic taverns, and restaurants with more traditional menu offer to more luxurious ones, one can find whatever their heart desires. And then there are ones who incorporate both. Places where you can eat traditional Dalmatian stew for two as a main dish, and order aubergine ratatouille as a starter. Perfect balance you see.

Gastronomy scene in Trogir is evolving every year. You can have an amazing pizza here right on the promenade, a sushi evening, bao buns and spring rolls? Sure! Michelin guide recommendation restaurants perhaps? You can find them as well here. And then you have the „holy“ food, burgers, and holly molly do we have some great places with first class burgers. You know the places where you shouldn’t go for a meal wearing light colours, where the sweet sauces keep oozing down your hands? Well that kind of burgers. Bars with exquisite coctails and selections of drinks, as well as caffes with great coffee and great views, both on the island of the Old Town, but also on Čiovo and the main land side.

OKRUG GORNJ beach (known as Copacabana)

The Okrug Beach is most popular beach on Trogir Riviera, also known as Copacabana beach. Located at 3 km from Trogir center, it extends over 2 km and offer several coffee bars, restaurants, water sport activities and children water park. It is a long gravel beach. It is reachable from Trogir in several ways: by car (5 minutes), walking (20 minutes) and by boat. In summertime from the main Trogir waterfront there are taxi-boat companies which are connecting Trogir to the Copacabana beaches. They are running from mid-May to mid-October, off-season every hour, in high season every 15 minutes till mid-night. This is the ideal mean of transportation for all of them who are staying in the town and want to go to the beach and for those who are staying in Okrug Gornji and want to visit Trogir. This is more likely to a party beach ideal for a younger population. At only 500 m from the port where the taxi-boat are departing, on south-west part of the island the beach continues into a shorter pebble beach, called Planikovica, which is quieter than the famous Copacabana.

Trogir is a small medieval town between Šibenik and Split, located in the region calling Dalmatia.
Dalmatia by far is the most popular tourist area in the country, with many seasonal flights, villas for each budget, and visits by cruise ships. The region is also famed for its preserved ancient towns where you can enjoy remarkable examples of Venetian, Greek, Roman, and Austria-Hungarian architecture. Besides natural beauties and historical sites, visitors to Dalmatia can enjoy the active holidays, good food, wines.
We collected for you some common travel tips in Trogir, for any further assistance or advices – contact Kairos travel office.

Drink water. Trogir, Split and Solin are supplied from the aqueduct built by the Emperor Diocletian himself who brought water from the source of river Jadro near today’s Solin. Average forecast for summertime in Dalmatia is +30C and sunny, so feeling thirsty – drink Diokletian water.

Tips and Tricks Hint Clue Instruction Advice Concept

Enjoy Dalmatian clean food. Dalmatian food is above all what is calling “clean food”, meaning that besides olive oil, salt, parsley, and garlic, only little spices are used, and thus the food tastes natural. Traditional food in Dalmatia is very light, based a lot on fish, and other seafood, green and leafy veggies like Swiss chard, and kale, then broad beans, artichokes, olive oil, garlic, parsley, and other Mediterranean herbs.

Taste Croatian wine. In the last twenty years, many family-run wineries have set high standards in the production of quality wines made of indigenous grape varieties, like Malvazija, a dry white wine produced in Istria, or Plavac Mali. In many restaurants and bars you can get a glass of wine for 30-60 HRK.

Visit national parks around. With a surface of just over 56.000 m2, Croatia is rather a small country. The country has eight national parks, ten nature parks, and two strict reserves. Almost 10% of the country’s territory is protected. Plitvice Lakes, Croatia’s most visited national park, as well as Krka national park, are both famed for their lakes, streams, rapids, and waterfalls. The national parks of Kornati, Brijuni, and Mljet are located on the islands and characterized by rich marine life. The Risnjak, Northern Velebit, and Paklenica national parks cover mountainous areas. They all feature interesting limestone rocks, meadows, and vast forests.

Discover islands. For sure you’ve heard of the beautiful islands in Croatia – one of the famous features of the Croatian coast that attracts thousands visitors to the country each year. Most tourists will probably go for one of the five main islands: Hvar, Brač, Korčula, Vis, and Mljet, each with a very different vibe and varied attractions. You can book a boat to discover small and pebble islands with stunning bays and crystal water or plan to explore big island written above.

Due to its geographical position, Trogir has always been a perfect place for living. With its naturally protected port, many springs of drinking water, fertile soil in the hinterland and stone from local quarries, Trogir has been inhabited for more than 3,600 years.

This inspiring Mediterranean city has attracted many great masters ever since the time of the ancient Greeks. These masters lived in Trogir and created some of their most famous masterpieces here. Various artists, writers, craftsmen and travelers found their inspiration here and have left behind numerous marks of their work. Over the centuries, Trogir has turned into a magnificent treasury with many historical and cultural monuments, so UNESCO placed it on the list of protected cultural sites in 1997.

In its cobbled streets, Trogir preserves numerous traces of local and foreign masters that are just waiting to be discovered. Skillfully carved into the stone facades of the city, seemingly insignificant notches, dents, dashes, crescents, flowers, leaves and twigs, axes, blueprints and merels are revealed only to the keen eye of a curious observer. In these marks one can see all the richness of art and the joy of everyday life in Trogir.

Trogir is a unique example in the history of European architecture and it is the city with the largest number of such stone signs or marks in Europe. Each mark carries its own meaning. Some of them mark the end of the construction, some represent the personal signature of the master and some are engraved votive prayers. The masters also craved games into the stone, like chess and merel, that used for entertainment during the construction break. Discrete, but yet so powerful, these marks in stone can be seen on the facades and interior walls of the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence and Church of Saint John the Baptist. The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is the most famous church in Trogir. Its construction lasted for five centuries and the mixture of styles can be seen on the bell tower. The first floor was built in Gothic style, the second in Venetial floral style, and the third in Renaissance style. Several great masters contributed to the construction of the Cathedral. The main entrance of Radovan’s portal has the most significant artistic value. The portal is a sculptural masterpiece.

The great tradition of mastery in Trogir is still preserved by contemporary masters of art, crafts and gastronomy. Their workshops reveal a completely different world, one that arouses curiosity and fills you with happiness and contentment. Contemporary painters, sculptors and stonemasons produce art that will be engraved in your heart forever. The masters who make “rafiol”, carob products or olive oil will offer you a unique tasting experience, while cobblers, tailors and masters who make coral jewelry convey the spirit of the city all over the world.
